14K Gold-Filled vs. Gold-Plated

In short, there is a lot more gold in 14K gold-filled jewelry than there is in 14K gold plated pieces. 14 karat gold-filled is composed of a solid layer of gold - which must constitute at least 5% of the item’s total weight - mechanically bonded to sterling silver or another base metal. You can always be certain that 14K gold-filled jewelry is nickel free. 14K gold-filled has the same appearance as 14K gold, but at a much lower cost. Even with daily wear, 14K gold-filled items can last years, because they are 5 to 10 times thicker than regular gold plating, which will tarnish pretty quickly. 

What makes 14K gold-plated different from gold-filled? The layer of gold on a plated piece is not nearly as long lasting, because water and sweat cause this thin layer to not only tarnish, but scratch and wear off. With high-levels of attention and care, gold-plated jewelry may survive for 2 years but will eventually need to be re-plated. This makes gold-plated an option for trendy pieces that you only want to wear a handful of times.
