Pima Cotton, Defined
Cotton is one of the most versatile materials used to create many products, from towels to bedding to clothing. Cotton is a staple fiber, which means it is composed of different, varying lengths of fiber. Did you know there are many different kinds of cotton? There are more than 135 different types of cotton including Egyptian cotton, organic cotton, and Pima cotton. At erin gray, we make our classic and timeless tees with the highest quality cotton, Pima cotton.
Pima cotton is a type of extra-long staple cotton, which means the individual fibers making up the cotton are at least one and three-eighths inches long. This makes Pima cotton softer, stronger, and longer-lasting than short-staple cotton. Pima cotton fibers are 50% longer than standard cotton fibers.
Pima earns its name from the Pima tribe of American Indians who cultivated this superior strain of cotton in the southwest United States. Pima is grown in Peru, America, and Australia, but only about 3% of the cotton grown in the United States is Pima, making it rare and more expensive than standard cotton.
What makes Pima cotton superior?
Pima cotton is superior to other cotton varieties because of the length and strength of the fibers. Spinning and weaving turns raw cotton into finished material. A longer fiber length means that fewer fiber ends are exposed on the surface throughout this process. The result is a silky smooth material that resists pilling and holds its shape and luster much longer than other materials. Pima is also the strongest of all cotton varieties, making fabrics that are lasting and durable.
